The Rehearsal Tapes

The "rehearsal tapes series" are recorded live on Thad's Zoom H2 recorder. He then dumps them out onto his computer, adjusts the balance, EQ, etc. and turns them out as mp3s for your enjoyment.

This is a continuing series, so keep an eye out for more! If you're new to the rehearsal tapes series you can go straight to the online folder with all the tunes. It makes for easier downloading.

Back on October 14, 2009 we got together in Thadd's living room and recorded two rehearsal tapes! The first is Singin' In The Rain. I had just learned it and started playing. Everyone joined in and we liked it so well we did another run-through for posterity. A little bit later we recorded the Fats Waller tune, Honeysuckle Rose. Hobbit has blogged about this session, if you want all the details.

Here's an original tune by Thadd called, Don't Quit The Day Job. This is a milestone as it's the first rehearsal tape that's also a video! It was recorded in Thadd's living room on May 5, 2009. The studio version of this song is available on Serpentine. Check it out too!

Tiny Bubbles. Yes, the Leon Pober tune made (in)famous by the late, lamented, Don Ho. It features Hobbit on his Ohana sopranino ukulele and Thadd has been lured over to the dark side at least long enough to play the Glyph soprano on this one! It was recorded live in Hobbit's living room on February 26, 2009. Hobbit has a blog entry with more details.

Sausage is a new tune by Thadd about all sorts of sausage and why he doesn't eat them. Picture a Django-ish minor swing tune with novelty lyrics. Still the new quartet but this time Sketch is using his "street kit." It was recorded in Thadd's living room on December 4, 2008. You can read all about it here if you like.

Daisy Fraser is a tune Hobbit wrote about a woman scorned, and the hell she raises because of it! We recorded it in Hobbit's living room on October 1, 2008. It's the new quartet but this time Sketch is back on drums instead of washboard.

Burnt Bean Water is a tune about Seattle's favorite (legal) drug and was written by our friend Jim Nason. We recorded this one on September 17, 2008 in Thadd's living room. It and the next two are by the new quartet, featuring salamandir on tuba.

(Note: This and some of the other links on this page take you to Hobbit's MediaFire account for download. You do not have to register to download the files.)

Dead Egyptian Blues is a song written by Michael Smith. It's one of the Snake's favorites. It came out of the same session as Burnt Bean Water.

Say Hello To Mr. Snake is a tune that Hobbit wrote and is nearly our "theme song." This was recorded on September 8, 2008 in Thadd's living room. Scroll down a little farther on this page and you can listen to a "studio" version of the tune, done by the original quartet.

Here's a tune written by our friend, Craig Robertson. It features the original quartet and was recorded in Hobbit's living room. You can download Nicotine or stream it in hifi or lofi format.

Assorted Tunes

These next two were recorded "live" (that is, no overdubs) in Thadd's studio. We wanted everyone to hear what the original quartet version of Snake Suspenderz sounded like.

You can check out Get It Right The First Time in either hi-fi (for broadband users) or lo-fi (for dialup users). This is a fine piece of acoustic jazz (we also did a version on our first CD, Preliminary Slither. You can also download the hi-fi version so you can take it with you on your iPod.

This version of Say Hello To Mr. Snake [hi-fi lo-fi] is available on our CD, A Few Loose Scales. It is a paean to our logo, mascot, good friend and all around snappy dresser, Mr. Snake, who is on the front cover of Preliminary Slither. Go ahead and download this one.

These next two are from back when we were a lonely duo...

Here's one from Preliminary Slither, That's How Judi [hi-fi lo-fi], a gently humorous and slightly skewed look at heartbreak, redemption and true love. It's also the first ever song that Howlin' Hobbit wrote on the 'ukulele instead of the guitar and features a dynamite trombone solo by Thaddeus. You can also download it for your mp3 player.

Here's another one from Preliminary Slither... Keepin' Up With My Jones [hi-fi lo-fi] was the title track from Howlin' Hobbit's long out of print first cassette. He re-wrote it for the 21st Century and it's yours now! Go ahead and download this one too!

We'd like to offer special thanks to Richard Hefner at ezFolk.com for his generous free audio hosting! You can also visit the Snake Suspenderz ezFolk site. There's lots of fine acoustic music at ezFolk.com from both professional and dedicated amateur musicians in all sorts of categories and genres.

Enjoy!
